SUSTAINABILITY IN PRACTICE

Here at Green Island Studios we are committed to greening our photographic arts practice. Here are some of the ways that we do this day to day, can you suggest any others?

We are off-grid and are entirely powered by renewable source energy generation. We practice sustainable sourcing at all times, for example using rechargeable batteries. We have only low-energy lighting, and always turning everything off is the norm, no standby mode for our computers at night!

In the studio, darkrooms, and on-site accommodation we do not use high energy consumption devices such as air conditioning units and electric heating systems. In the attached staff and guest accommodation we do not use electric powered ovens or heating, nor any tumble dryers and dishwashers and we heavily limit the use of extractor fans and hair dryers.

We are committed to researching and using eco print processing methods wherever possible. We always ask our suppliers about their own environmental policy and ask if they can use eco ink & papers for production of our products.

We prefer to source reusable materials for our work and have a policy to repair and recycle everything that can’t be reused. We purchase second hand kit whenever possible.

We consider our materials and foods miles, and try to source local and organic products where possible.

We avoid plastics, excess packaging and disposables in favour of reusable glass and fabric options. We compost all of our organic waste.

We buy clothing and linens made from organic fabrics, and seek out textiles made from recycled fabrics and produced sustainably such as Tencel.

We love to Upcycle! Ask us about our innovative projects with ancient cameras, mechanical toys, orphaned lego and broken solar panels among others…

We love to talk about this, so please contact us if you wish to join the discussion!
